שומרון הייתה בירת ממלכת ישראל במשך כמאתים שנה. לאחר חורבנה הוקמה מחדש בתור עיר רומית ונקראה "סבסטיה". בראשית המאה ה-20 נערכו בה חפירות ארכיאולוגיות ונמצאו בה ממצאים חשובים: שרידים מארמון ה"שן" של אחאב, מלך ישראל אשר נעשו מ"שן פיל" - היום במוזיאון רוקפלר. עוד ממצא חשוב הם "חרסי שומרון" אשר לפיהם ניתן לאתר את היושבים היהודים באזור בתקופת המקרא.
